A superb ABC News TV mini-series – hosted by reporter and veteran Jack Smith – is a set of documentaries, with each episode providing a different segment of the Vietnam war, as seen through the eyes of the veterans of the war. With excellent interviews and rare footage.
This is the episode: “Tet: The Battle for Hearts & Minds” and features outstanding interviews with the most well-known participants. With rare combat footage and live interviews, this series documents the conflict from a soldier’s viewpoint. The footage is startling, dramatic and frequently graphic. The interviews are crisp and tightly woven into the narrative.
This episode covers the 1968 Tet offensive, during which thousands of soldiers, including American, South Vietnamese and Allied forces, engaged in heavy combat with North Vietnamese regular soldiers and Vietcong forces. The battle began on 31 January 1968 with simultaneous attacks across the country against over 100 cities, towns and hamlets, military bases and the US Embassy in Saigon. The offensive ended in the northern provinces when US Marines recaptured the citadel in the ancient capitol of Hue.
This series first aired in October 1998 in six parts. Apologies for any technical issues with the picture or audio – this transfer was taken from an original VHS copy of the program.
