“The elections went pretty well. Now we are waiting for the election result. That is my hope as well. This country has to move on forward, not always depending on foreign decisions – economically, politically especially the Europeans who have bad habits in giving us orders in what to do and how to do it and how to rule this country. So the new people coming into power have got to be totally free to rule this country freely as Congolese.”

The hope on the streets of Kinshasa was that the country would now be able to move forward.
“This country has to move on forward,” said Billy Mweka. “Not always depending on foreign decisions,” he said.
The election on Sunday was to choose a new president and legislature to replace Congo’s post-war transitional administration.
According to Congolese election officials, 11 polling stations were burned down by people opposed to the vote in central provinces but the voting was otherwise largely peaceful.
Electoral officials have decided to re-open 172 polling stations in the region of Kasai on Monday to give voters another chance to cast their ballots in provinces that were hit by the violence.
Reports from 10 polling stations in Mbuji-Mayi late Sunday indicated turnout was between five and 15 percent .
