Meet the Major: Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

VIDEO TRANSCRIPT:
– Hi, I’m Bryson Burke, and I am a sophomore biochemistry and molecular biology major at UMass. I’d say the BMB major is really just the chemistry of what’s going on in organisms and cells, and you take the principles of chemistry and apply it to all the intricacies that go along with biology.

-So I chose the BMB major because I was choosing classes for my senior year of high school, and I decided to take AP Bio, and my mom said that I should also take AP Chemistry, and I was like, “Hmm, I guess she has a point.” So I signed up for both, and I just realized that I had a passion for those kinds of sciences, and biochemistry was the perfect combo.

-I am on the pre-med track here at UMass, so my plan currently is to get a bachelor’s and then head on to med school!

-All of the professors I’ve had experiences with in the major have been extremely knowledgeable and just super helpful, and super open to being there for any problems, any questions you have. It’s just a really good experience and really fosters your learning. One professor in particular is my general chemistry professor, Justin Fermann. It was an honors course, and he just took it a way that I’ve never really experienced, and it was just super eye-opening to learn chemistry in that way.

-So one really cool thing about being a biochemistry student here is the experience that you can get just in lab courses. So I’ve been able to experience some really cool things, like in my intro lab this semester, we’ve been working with E. Coli, and we’ve even been editing some plasmid, stuff like that, so we’re just working as a team and having a good time but also learning a lot with your peers. It’s a really cool experience.

-I would say if you’re looking to get into biochemistry, you just have to be prepared for a lot of hard work and putting in a lot of effort, but once you dedicate yourself to it, it’s really satisfying to learn a lot of things and be able to apply them.
