New modern GDI or gasoline direct injection high pressure pumps can be of two types, the three piston pump and the more common single piston pump, with a pressure and volume control solenoid. This single piston GDI High Pressure Fuel Pump is suitable for most homogeneous and stratified combustion gasoline direct injection engine schemes. Its roller follower or tappet cam drive plunger designs reduce friction and contribute to fuel economy and greater power. The pump is an engine driven, on-demand control pump that features a single-piston and integrated design, also supporting a wide range of engine software maps. It delivers operating pressure from 30 bar to 200 bar, or 100 to 2900 PSI. These pumps offer a high flow capability for larger displacement engines. GDi Fuel Pumps includes an integrated flow control valve for accurate fuel control and an integrated overpressure relief valve. A one way valve is also included, which helps maintain the fuel rail internal pressure.

Seen here we can see the cam lobe actuating on the GDI high pressure pump plunger and piston. Upon simple observation it is a normal piston pump, with nothing extraordinary about it. However, the key component here is the fuel pressure control solenoid to the right of the pump side. The ingenious ingredient here is the high processing power of the ECM used to control the pump solenoid. The idea is for the ECM to …. Get the whole story right here in this video… Enjoy…
