April 30th 1975 - The end of the Vietnam War and Fall of Saigon | HISTORY CALENDAR

TODAY IN HISTORY: On April 30th, 1975, Viet Cong and North Vietnamese forces capture Saigon, the capital of South Vietnam. Panic breaks out. Many escape to the U.S. embassy trying to flee. But from there, only the last remaining Americans, after eleven years of war, are flown out last minute. The regular U.S. troops had already left the country after the Paris peace agreement in March 1973; South Vietnamese President Thieu’s regime was no match against communist North Vietnam. It collapsed with the fall of Saigon. Under the leadership of Hanoi, Vietnam was reunited in 1976 and Saigon was renamed Ho-Tsi-Mingh City.
