Advice on developing a career in Molecular and Cell Biology

Naynesh is a recruitment consultant at CK Science and specialises in the permanent recruitment of scientists and in this video he speaks to you about beginning or developing your career working with Molecular and Cell Biology.

Introduction to Molecular and Cell Biology
Molecular biology is the study of biology at the molecular level. The field overlaps with other areas of biology and chemistry, particularly genetics and biochemistry.

Cell biology studies the properties of cells including their, their structure, the organelles they contain, interactions with their environment, their life cycle, division and death.

Molecular and cellular biology are interrelated, since most of the properties and functions of a cell can be described at the molecular level.

Molecular and cell biology encompass many biological fields including: biotechnology, developmental biology, physiology, genetics and microbiology.

Where are most companies located?
Most companies operating in the field of Molecular / Cell biology tend to operate as a CRO (Contract Research Organisation).

The main industry hubs in the UK where these types of companies are often found are mainly located in:
Cambridge, Scotland, North West, Leeds, Wiltshire and London.

What skills do employers look for?
• Employers tend to look for candidates who have studied biological science degrees such as Biotechnology, Life Science, Cell Biology or Molecular Biology.
• In addition to any qualifications, employers may also be interested in scientists who have worked in a GMP regulated environment.
• Experience — It’s a good idea to get some experience in industry, either a gap year or some voluntary experience. A good lab based dissertation or a summer placement.
