A love of chemistry, drugs and other things – Professor Gary Evans

A love of chemistry, drugs and other things - Professor Gary Evans

The discovery of new drugs is a multi-disciplinary endeavour that relies heavily upon chemistry and the ways in which a chemist can strengthen binding to a particular target, usually a protein. The better the binding, the more powerful the drug, with fewer side-effects. Professor Evans discusses what bound him to a career in drug discovery, and his particular interest in small molecules binding to large molecules. Included is an overview of current research at Victoria’s Ferrier Research Institute into the treatment of cancer and bacterial infections.

This is Professor Evans’ inaugural lecture as Professor of Chemistry at Victoria University of Wellington.
