Knight's XM9 Beretta "Hush Puppy" – For USAF Survival Kits

Knight's XM9 Beretta "Hush Puppy" - For USAF Survival Kits

Cool Forgotten Weapons merch!

The original “Hush Puppy” was a Smith & Wesson Model 39 pistol fitted with a suppressor for use by Special Forced in Vietnam. The name came back in the 1980s, when the US Air Force requested a suppressor for use with the M9 Beretta in its pilots’ survival kits. Knight’s Armament developed a design that used a clever and very quick snap-on attachment method. It was a wipe-based suppressor, with a functional lifespan of about 25 rounds. The pistols were fitted with slide lock levers to further reduce the sound of firing. Approximately 3,800 were supplied to the Air Force, and a few years ago, the company sold about 188 of them on the civilian market.

In practice, this combination is indeed extremely quiet. The report of the shot definitely became louder over the course of about 20 rounds fired, though.

might as well as make the case a bit bigger and supply them with some sub-sonic ammunition just enough to get you through the wipes. To me it makes sense. The gun is much quieter (no more sonic boom) and theoretically, keeps the soldier safer.

This was firing 147gn subsonics at the range, yes?

Why not put baffles in the empty space so it's not entirely dependent on wipes?

With all those wipes, and yeah it's minimal, but due to all those wipes would it affect bullet energy, going through all that first slows the bullet?, also if you look at the wipes after those 20+ rounds you can see quite a bit of positinal variation, meaning the bullet is being slightly forced off center on the way through them all.

I remember reading about this suppressor for the Beretta from a firearms magazine as a teenager. It's so cool to see this on your video about two decades later and even with a shooting footage. Thanks Ian!

Are there any surviving prototypes of the M60? I don't mean are there any surviving and 60s I mean prototypes that led up to the M60. Just to be clear I I'm not speaking of the guns that inspired it but are directly related to it. I understand that the fg42 and the mg42 are distant relatives what I am talking about is the fg42 / mg42 hybrid that was belt fed. Anything between that gun and the M60 especially American development.

So in video games when suppressor only lasts a dozen shots or so, it's actually realistic? I learned something today!
