Passion for Physics for nearly 400 Asian youths inspired by APhO President

On May 11, 2018, Prof. Leong Chuan KWEK - President of APhO, Principal Investigator at the Center for Quantum Technologies, National University of Singapore (NUS) gave talks to nearly 400 Asian students at the Hanoi University of Science and Technology.

In 1981, in a keynote address at the California Institute of Technology, Richard Feynman broached the subject of a computer that serves as a quantum mechanical simulator. Recent advances in quantum computing and communication have brought us a step closer towards realization such quantum simulators.

With the topic of “quantum computation and communication”, Prof. Leong Chuan KWEK has brought the youths to the new knowledge of science, especially the advances in the area . “Recently, there has been quite a bit of hype regarding the possibility of quantum computing and some commercial companies have heavily invested in building a quantum computer (e.g. Google, IBM, Microsoft). It is interesting to survey the landscape in this area” - tells President of APhO Leong Chuan KWEK.

As a scientist working for a long time in this field, Prof. KWEK said: “This area is really my bread and butter research one, I can talk passionately to the students about the area that I am working on”. He added: “Last year, in Yakutsk, I gave three scientific talks and one of them was on high energy physics. Though I am not an expert and just have some experiences in this area, I was able to give the longish introductory talk. The other two talks were quantum information science (i.e. Quantum computation and communication)”.

These fruitful topics by Prof. Leong Chuan KWEK have encouraged the passion of the young generations for Physics at HUST today. “The world of scientific development is constant, there have been a lot of intensive research studies into quantum information everywhere in Asia: China has just recently announced that they would be investing two billion dollars in the center for quantum information. Both the European Union and the UK Research Council have invested heavily in these areas” – Prof. Leong Chuan KWEK emphasizes. Also, this area has enhanced our understanding of quantum mechanics, the Physics branch that has intrigued many students for the past few decades.
